Next Day Layered Lettuce Salad

1 head of lettuce 2 c. mayonnaise
½ c. chopped onion 2 Tbsp. sugar  
½ c. chopped celery ½ c. grated cheese
½ c. chopped green pepper     8 slices cooked bacon
1 (10 oz.) package of frozen green peas  

Break lettuce into bite-sized pieces; place into 9x13-inch dish. Add onion, celery and green pepper atop lettuce. In a bowl, mix mayonnaise and sugar; stir in peas and spread mixture over vegetables. Sprinkle with cheese. Break bacon slices into small bits and sprinkle over cheese. Cover dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
